Northwoods Improvisers first came together in 1976. Mike Gilmore (vibes) and Mike Johnston (bass) were founding members of the ensemble. Nick Ashton (drums) joined in 1986. Along with Johnston and Ashton, Donovan Boxey and Dominic Bierenga make up the wind section and Mike Khoury and Jack O’Brien comprise the string section.
